Miniature Forest Meets the Real World – Outdoor Photo Session

Half of my conifer forest is ready — and this time, instead of video, I went for a proper photo session.

The location: Zakrzówek in Cracow.

This shoot continued the same idea I explored in my previous experiment — blending hand-made miniature trees with the real environment. But unlike the video, this time I could slow down, play with composition, and focus on finding the right balance between model and landscape.

Arranging the trees took a while. Changing sunlight was both inspiring and frustrating — one minute it gave me beautiful soft light, and the next it shifted completely, destroying the setup. So I kept adjusting, moving the trees, changing the angle, trying again. My phone’s autofocus didn’t make things easier either; getting a natural depth of field without separating the miniature foreground from the background was surprisingly tough.

Still, I’m pleased with the outcome, though I definitely see room for improvement. These photos capture what I was hoping for — that fragile line between reality and illusion. And even though this was just a small part of the forest, it already gave me a taste of what’s possible when miniature crafting meets real-world light and scale.

Oh, and yes — that’s me in the last photo, just checking on the trees. Or pretending to be a slightly lost Ent 😄

Final thoughts

After experimenting with both video and outdoor photography, I have mixed feelings about this approach. In theory, using natural light should give perfect lighting across the entire scene — something difficult to achieve when digitally adding a background later. But in reality, the light changed constantly, often leaving the models in shadow while the distant background remained brightly lit between the clouds. So the effect was frequently the opposite of what I intended.

I suspect that a more neutral backdrop — like the sky or distant mountains — would be easier to blend with models placed close to the camera. Here, the miniature trees had to match the size of the real forest in the background (which was about 30 meters away). So beyond lighting, I also had to worry about the horizon line and camera angle to make the illusion work. And of course… the focus 😅 A 30-meter gap between foreground and background isn’t exactly camera-friendly.

Although I’m satisfied with the images and the experiment itself, I admit I was hoping for a slightly better result.

In the next sessions, I’ll try playing with digital editing — so there will be some comparisons coming 😊

Enjoy the photos and see you in the next post!
