At this point in my hobby journey, I don’t consider myself a miniature painter (yet π), but ultimately I’d love to become one.
Well, maybe that’s a bit of an overstatement — I definitely prefer creating something from scratch to painting miniatures. Even in terrain crafting, I love the building phase, when you see something emerging in 3D. After that, I quite often feel overwhelmed when I realize, “Now I have to paint the damn thing…” π
But still, painting is a crucial part of this hobby, and I really want to get better at it.
That’s why some time ago (I can’t remember exactly how long ago — definitely years rather than months), I signed up for a painting for beginners class at @Modelarnia Agtom in KrakΓ³w (https://www.facebook.com/ModelarniaAgtom). Back then, it was a dedicated space for hobby crafting and painting.
During the course, @grey_seer_pivek (Instagram) taught me the basics of miniature painting and shared valuable knowledge about modeling tools, paints, glues, and other materials.
Perhaps that theoretical knowledge was the most crucial part. I learned a lot — and also realized how little I’d known before. To excuse myself a bit, I started years ago, when there were no YouTube tutorials available, and my main method was “try and see as you go,” which obviously quite often ended poorly. Then came several years of break… and here we are again. I’m really glad that this time I chose a different approach.
In the pictures below you can see the results of that course: a Space Marine painted in a green color scheme. It’s something completely different from my regular miniature collection, which focuses almost entirely on Lord of the Rings miniatures. So this was my first ever (and so far only) Warhammer miniature painted by myself.
However, the StarCraft Tabletop Game is going to be released in early 2026 (and I’m really excited about this! π), so for sure another version of Marines will arrive on my tabletop — and that experience will come in handy!
I’m really glad I took that course and was happy with the final effect, but to be honest, after those classes I switched to terrain crafting and haven’t painted any minis since! (True story π)
Despite that, it definitely wasn’t a waste of time — I still use some of the knowledge and techniques from that course in my terrain building. While I enjoy crafting from scratch the most, I’d love to see my entire miniature collection fully painted and battle-ready one day — there are literally hundreds of models waiting!
So the plan for the near future is to focus more on miniature painting and to do it side by side with terrain crafting. (Haha, I wonder how that will work out π)
