Between Model and Reality – Miniature Forest Experiment
Before showing the finished trees, I wanted to share a small experiment I tried along the way — something halfway between terrain building and photography. This little forest (video below) might not be as real as it looks at first glance 😉
I recently finished half of my conifer trees (you might remember them from WIP no. 3*) and decided to take them outdoors, blending them into a real-world landscape to see how convincing the illusion could get.
The goal was simple: create a seamless transition between model and reality. The execution… not that simple 😅
It took hours of tweaking, adjusting, and re-setting the scene. Natural light was both a gift and a curse — sometimes perfect and cinematic, sometimes completely ruining the shot. Every time the light changed, I had to adjust something again. And again.
Another tricky part was the focus. I wanted the miniatures to blend naturally into the scenery without looking too sharp or too separate — and I’m still figuring that out. Any tips from fellow creators or photographers are very welcome! (Really, please tell me how to do it better 😉)
The final video might look calm and effortless, but behind it there were hours of small adjustments, testing, and patience. And honestly? I enjoyed every bit of it. There’s still plenty to learn, but for a first attempt at mixing miniature terrain with the real world, I’m quite happy with how it turned out.
Let me know if the illusion worked on you — even for a second 😉
